Renfrewshire Council urged the Health Secretary and the First Minister to reject the decision made by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and protect Ward 15 of the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
Councillor Iain McMillan, the chair of the Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership, put forward an emergency motion calling on Scottish Government to save essential hospital services for children.
It follows a decision by the Board of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde to recommend moving paediatric inpatient care away from the renowned Ward 15 of the Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH) in Paisley.
If the decision is approved by the health secretary cherished local services would transfer to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.
Paying tribute to campaigners fighting to keep services in the area, Councillor Iain McMillan said: “Local people have never wavered in their passion for saving Ward 15 and they will be incredibly disappointed by the Health Board’s decision
“The council has called on both the Health Secretary and the First Minister to honour their pledges to the people of Renfrewshire to protect Ward 15 and keep health services local.
“If they approve the Health Board’s decision it will have a significant impact on many families throughout our area.
“The message from the people of Renfrewshire could not be clearer: These are essential local services and we want them to be delivered at Ward 15.”
