Thousands of Paisley citizens used their social media accounts yesterday in order to celebrate their 2021 UK City of Culture.

The UK Government Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) encouraged the five shortlisted cities for the City of Culture bid to share photos, facts and messages of support on social media.

Yesterday, Monday the 4th of December, was Paisley’s chance to get involved and celebrate by sharing content and favourite things about the city in order to highlight what makes it unique.

@mrwhitepaisley tweeted: “I’m backing Paisley for #CityofCulture2021 because of our amazing heritage, people and culture. This is a special place with an incredible past and a future which could be unlocked by culture and creativity.”

As a result of the many tweets, retweets and sharing of hashtags, #Paisley was trending nationally across the UK on Twitter.

The Paisley 2021 Twitter account posted: “Amazing to see so many wonderful messages of support for #Paisley still coming in! Let’s keep this momentum going and show @DCMS why Paisley wants and deserves to be #CityofCulture2021! #Paisley2021

The UK City of Culture is a designation given to a city in the United Kingdom for a period of one year and on the evening of December 7th the 2021 UK City of Culture will be revealed.

Scottish Labour MSP Neil Bibby said: “Amazing to see thousands of tweets from Buddies to @DCMS today in support of the inspirational @Paisley2021 bid – clearly demonstrates that #Paisley wants, needs and can deliver as the UK City of Culture in 2021.”

  1. I wasn’t born in Paisley but had members of my family who lived here. Moved here in 1982, so I consider myself a Paisley buddy now. I love my wee toon so much. Many famous people have walked these streets. We have such a beautiful town, such history and heritage, so worthy of the title, City of Culture…xx
