Generous shoppers help children through a ‘Giving Christmas Tree’

A ‘Giving Christmas Tree’ that is currently located in the Parkhead Forge Shopping Centre has so far seen hundreds of gifts being donated this festive period to the ‘With Kids’ charity.

The ‘Giving Christmas Tree’

The charity tree features the wish lists of children in the local Glasgow area that may not receive any gifts this Christmas for a variety of reasons.

Shoppers are encouraged to take a list and purchase the items listed on it then return the unwrapped gifts to the customer service desk.

Today, the East End shopping centre made a delivery of the donated gifts so far to the charity that has a wide range of services to help support children within the home, school and community environments.

The Forge posted on Twitter: “The support for this campaign has been incredible so far and we know there will be many happy children in Glasgow this Christmas morning due to the generosity of our customers. We would like to say a massive thank you to all of our customers who have donated. By spreading a little festive cheer we can make sure the kids in our local area have an unforgettable Christmas.”

A visitor to the shopping centre, Alison Blair, took part by purchasing the items on two different lists instead of buying herself a new outfit.

Wishlists from the tree

She then posted on Twitter about the campaign encouraging people ‘to give a little love this Christmas’ and the tweet received over 6,800 likes, grabbing the attention of people from around the world praising the idea and asking other ways to donate to the charity.

Suzy Blair, With Kids Community Development Co-ordinator, said: “The Forge Shopping Centre have been fantastic supporters over the past few years but this is the first time that we’ve had such an amazing response. The generosity of everyone means that we’ll be able to support hundreds of children and their families at what can be a very difficult and stressful time and continue to support them throughout the year. We couldn’t do the work that we do without the generosity of donors, supporters and everyone involved. It makes a huge difference to families – and not just for Christmas!”

Just some of the donations handed in by shoppers

The last date for handing in the Giving Tree gifts is Monday 11th December with the donations soon after making their way to children’s stockings across the area.

Jade Wilkie, Marketing Manager for the Forge, said: “Supporting this charity each year means a lot to the centre and after receiving our initial list of children’s wishes, this has grown weekly due to the exposure the charity has received with the help of this campaign and more families seeking help through With Kids.”

The charity are also keen to receive donations of non-perishable food items such as dried pasta, tins of soup and tins of vegetables.  These donations can also be handed in to the Customer Service Desk and collection buckets have been placed at all the centre Christmas displays.
